Music Video - Final Draft

This is the final draft of my music video. There have been many changes to it, including adding a male protagonist to enhance the gender binary opposition of male and female. This backed up Levi-Strauss' theory of binary opposition. The sense of good vs bad is enhanced with the female being portrayed as the good character as, according to the lyrics, "He left drinking with the boys in convoy". This proves that he is morally wrong as he leaves the female alone because she doesn't want to do what he does.

PRODUCT - Magazine Advert

Final Magazine Advert

This is my final promotional magazine advert for 'The Habits' new album 'Tainted Eternity'.

Final Product
The above image is a screenshot of the promotional magazine advert. I wanted to keep it simple and minimalistic to add a sense of mystery to who the band is and what they look like. The band name and album title are exactly the same font and layout as that from my digipak because I wanted there to be a sense of branding. I also used the same font for the rest of the information written on the advert so that viewers would recognise that they are part of the same band.
I followed many codes and conventions for my magazine advert because I wanted it to be simple so that people would know when the album is released and on what platforms it is going to be previewed on. I also followed conventions as I added a website for the band and the record label that they are signed to. I wanted to include what single is going to be on the album because audience's may not know the band by name but they may recognise the single.
I chose the image I did for the main photo because it is the same visualiser as that used in both my music video and the digipak. This gave a sense of branding so that the audience may recognise this psychadelic effect and associate it with 'The Habits'.

PRODUCT - Digipak

Final Digipak

These are screenshots of my final digipak

Front Cover
This is my final front cover. I have added a picture of the model and on iMovie I followed the same green screen technique to get the blue visualiser background. This follows the psychedelic theme running throughout the whole brand. I used a colour match for the album name to give continuity between the background and the album name. I added a drop shadow to both of the typographies to make it more bold and stand out against the background. In indie music the line beneath the band name seems to be conventional. Bands that use this are FoalsMuse and Mass Gothic. These are inspirations in terms of my digipak.

Inside Cover
This is the inside cover of my digipak. I thought that this would be a nice effect as it seems to be the same photo. This is not the same photo but I wanted to show that I have multiple photos. I was going to add the psychedelic effect but I thought that this would be overpowering. The brand identity is followed through the model being the same and her hair being unique and noticeable.

Inside Right Cover
The inside right cover will be behind the CD itself. I followed the brand identity through using the psychedelic visuals and also the same typography from the front cover. I copied and pasted it from one Photoshop page to another one. Around the outside I have written the main copyright and other bits that are conventional in digipaks.

Back Cover
The back cover is slightly larger than the other dimensions as it has to fit into the back cover of the jewel case. Also I have the spines on both sides of the cover. This is conventional in digipaks because of when on a shelf it is easy to spot and chose which album it is. I have copied the title directly from the front cover to follow the brand identity and in-house theme. The background is a screenshot from the iTunes visualiser. I have made up 10 song names which is average for an indie band because there is not too many songs that it is overpowering but there is enough so that it does not look to minimal and bare. I added a barcode and copyright text and the record label to follow conventions for a back cover on a digipak.

Digipak in Jewel Case

The below photos are of the digipak in the physical jewel case. The reason I have included this is to show the proportions and to prove that it fits perfectly into the case. It also gives my product a professional look because it is not just screenshots of the finished product.

PRODUCTION- Music Video Progress

Music Video - Log

These are screenshots of my progress so far. I have added the shots of the male subject singing with the visualiser effect behind it to follow brand identity. This adds to the narrative as it makes the idea of 'teenage love' because it is two teenagers talking about what the other did. I added the male when the lyrics are 'She Said' because it makes it look as though the male is telling the audience what the girl did say.

Male with Green screen effect

Close up of drums with green screen on snare drum
The shot that can be seen in the above screenshot is a close up shot of the snare drums as I had not got any shots of the drummer and so I decided to add this. I added the green screen effect because it fits with the theme and the shot seemed fairly boring without this effect.

AUDIENCE RESEARCH - Second Draft Feedback

Audience Feedback

I addressed the focus group and asked for their feedback on my second draft and this is what they had to say:
Anna - I like how the female subject is the main focus of the video as she is pretty and appeals to both male and female audiences. I also like the way she is not being subjected by having a lot of skin on show. However, there is still a lack of narrative which I would like to see. I want to know who the girl is talking to when she says "I kinda wanna go out dancing".

Josh - I like the pace of the editing compared to the first draft. It seems to be a lot tighter and, like Goodwin suggests, the visuals fit the beat. Again the narrative is still lacking and I think to make this more conventional there needs to be some form of narrative.

Lauren - I really like the iTunes visualiser and how it crops up regularly, however, it may be a little overused and the cutaways have not been used enough.

Charlton - I think you need less of the band and more cutaways because although the band looks good it just loses the audience's interest and I think that to keep their attention you need to keep changing the shots so have more cutaways and more story line.

PRODUCTION - Second Draft

Second Draft

This is the second draft for my music video. I have refined it and made it much tighter in terms of editing. I have added cutaways of a male subject to make the narrative more obvious and stand out more. This was done using a camera and shooting the subject from a straight on angle. This is the same as the close up of my female subject. There is also more use of the green screen to follow the brand identity and house style.
